Rollerball pens use a tiny, revolving ball to dispense liquid ink onto paper. Gel pens and ballpoint pens use the same ball mechanism to deposit their ink, but use gel- or oil-based ink, respectively. The terms “rollerball,” “ballpoint,” and “ball pen” are occasionally used more broadly to refer to any pen with a rotating ball in the tip, but we use “rollerball” only to refer to liquid ink pens. They are the most fluid writing out of the three types. If you suffer from hand cramps or fatigue, try a rollerball pen because it takes less pressure to write. However, because rollerball pens dispense more ink than gel or ballpoint pens, they may take longer to dry.
